A recent insurance company survey revealed that one in ten DIY jobs are so badly botched that a professional builder has to come to the rescue. Luckily Summit Cladding’s latest job didn’t get to that stage because the householder was wise enough to come to us before the problem arose! Sylvia contacted us on behalf of her mum who’s lived in her terraced house in Edmonton, North London, for over 30 years. She explained that her mum was extremely proud of her home — except for the exterior. She was worried that a DIY canopy above the front door might fall off the wall and injure someone. Concrete gutter issues Also, there was concrete guttering above the front bay window,... View Article

Avoid getting soaked! On these wet winter days the last thing you want is to get a soaking as you fumble for the keys to open your front door. The obvious answer – fit a canopy! David and Sally have been living in their mid-terrace cottage in Woodford, London E 18 for five years and every winter they’d been talking about creating a cover above the front door, to give it better weather protection and to enhance the look of the house. The only problem was a glass fanlight at the top of the door, allowing natural light into the hallway, which they didn’t want obstructed. Bespoke door canopy design Summit Cladding designs and fits bespoke door canopies and has... View Article

We all know that first impressions count. So the importance of a “good look” to the front of your house can’t be overstated. Summit Cladding was recently contacted by former clients who we’d worked for in 2006. They had just finished a major refurbishment of their beautiful house in Willesden, North West London. The only job outstanding was to fit a Georgian style canopy to their front door. Our clients knew exactly what they wanted and even had a photograph of an example. But there was one big problem. The canopy they wanted was only available in one size and there simply wasn’t enough space at the front of the house because of two existing bay windows. The previous builder... View Article

Summit were recently contacted by a client who lives in Barnet, north London. The client was very specific in her requirements and had lived at the property for over ten years. Having completely modernised the interior, she wanted to give the house an outside makeover, giving it the kerb appeal it deserved. After several site visits, Summit Cladding came up with an ideal solution that our client loved. We suggested constructing a pitched roof door canopy over the front door. This would alter the flat look of the front of the address and create more depth. To start, we hand-carved two wooden gallows brackets that would support the new timber frame. This we combined with a plain tile exactly the... View Article

The UK has many beautiful examples of Victorian properties thanks to the boom of the industrial revolution. Thousands of new homes were built across the country during the first half of the 19th century as demand for better accommodation in and around our major industrial centres grew. From terraced rows to grand villas, there are many styles of Victorian houses to be seen and most have real appeal thanks to the lovely original features which have sometimes been retained both within and without. If you are lucky enough to be the owner of a Victorian property, then you will know first-hand that DIY and repairs in general in properties of this age are never as straightforward as they might be... Homes across the Western world have been benefitting from the addition of beautiful door canopies for centuries. From grand mansions to rural cottages and from semi-detached houses to blocks of flats, door canopies are versatile in their application and their practicality means that few buildings would not benefit from having one installed. In recent years there has been an increasing revival of this feature in homes which might be seen to benefit from some exterior beautification as well as the protection which they afford to those entering and exiting a building. Even the plainest of exteriors can be enlivened and given more kerb-appeal by the simple addition of a pretty or classic door canopy. Period properties which have lost their... View Article

If you’re lucky enough to live in a period home, then you will be only too aware of the many issues which can arise when it comes to maintaining and replacing the fabric of the building. Hopefully these are tasks which you won’t have to undertake too often but things do wear…and even the most solidly built home can suffer from centuries of wind and rain! One of the most distinctive parts of any older home is often its entrance. Architects of the past were notoriously interested in creating beautiful, practical entrances which would both impress and delight passers-by and residents alike. Door Canopies Door canopies appear on houses of varying ages and on buildings of all types; grand mansions... View Article

It’s autumn already and the weather has begun to remind us how passionately we love canopies. But not just any canopies. At Summit Cladding, we believe in making an entrance; and we have some design ideas to match this mantra. Here are some inspiring door canopy features that you will absolutely love. Canopy Installers Often Utilise Columns Columns can be decorative or structural in purpose. From an aesthetics perspective, few canopy features make as bold nor as impressive a statement. Imhotep originally introduced stone columns into Egyptian architecture as early as 2600BC. Since then, they have evolved into a range of materials including wood, fibreglass, metal and concrete. The effect is dramatic and popular in a variety of architectural styles.... View Article
