Tudor-beamed house transformation in Cuffley, Hertfordshire

When planning a major renovation, or even sometimes just a small alteration, clients can be faced with difficult choices and find it hard to make up their minds. Which is where our knowledge and experience can help.

Our client has lived in this attractive mock Tudor detached house in Cuffley, Hertfordshire, for 30 years and made various changes over that time, including replacing the brown stained timber window frames for white PVC. But the mock timber beams crisscrossing the lovely herringbone-style brickwork remained brown.

Brown or black? Summit Cladding can help

The question facing our client was: should he leave the beams that colour when having the fascias and soffits replaced in black and white PVC? Would it be better to change all the woodwork, including the timber garage doors, to black? Our advice was a firm yes, and after some deliberation our client agreed.

The wooden garage doors had been treated with Sadolin stain, so we used mechanical sanders to get back to the bare wood, then cleaned them thoroughly to get rid of loose particles. We then applied a microporous water-based barn paint in satin finish that is resistant to cracking and flaking.

Maintenance-free soffits, fascias and gutters

On the house, we removed all the existing timber fascias and soffits, replacing them with Swish Summit black ask coloured PVC with white tongue and groove soffits. We also fitted over-fascia vents for extra airflow into the loft space. Eaves support trays were installed to direct rainwater into the high-capacity gutters and downpipes. The fascia boards are guaranteed for 10 years and require no maintenance.

Then, finally, those mock Tudor beams on the brickwork were sanded down, like the garage doors, and given a coating of matt-black barn paint. That simple alteration has transformed the appearance of the house and we are sure that our client is pleased he agreed with Summit Cladding’s advice!
